What We Do

Under the Water Act of 2016 the mandate of the Coast Water Works Development Agency is to develop and maintain sustainable water and sanitation infrastructure within the Coast region. The main transmission pipelines, including Mzima, Baricho, Marere and Tiwi – Likoni lines are maintained by the CWWDA. Pipeline patrols are critical in ensuring that leaks and bursts are detected and attended to on time to avoid wastage of the resources. The Mzima pipeline which was developed from 1953 is prone to leaks and bursts. Over the last decade the Agency has developed major key infrastructure including the recently completed project of drilling and equipping of 3 additional boreholes in Baricho, development of the 56Km 500mm diameter Malindi – Kilifi water pipeline, the development of the 37Km 400mm diameter Malindi - Gongoni water pipeline, and construction of a 5,000m3 storage reservoir at Kilifi.

Other milestones achieved included:
  1. Constructed over 500 km of pipeline networks, mostly rehabilitation and extensions.
  2. Constructed a total of fifteen (15) storage reservoirs of different capacities, the biggest being 5,000 cubic meters.
  3. Installed a total of five (5) surface tanks, each 500 cubic meters.
  4. Installed a total of 15 elevated steel tanks, each rated 100cubic meters.
  5. Drilled and equipped a total of one hundred and twenty (120) boreholes in different counties.
  6. Constructed a total of 45 pans and small dams.
  7. Rehabilitated a total 56 boreholes including the high yielding boreholes at Baricho Water Works.
  8. Constructed and rehabilitated a total of twelve (12) pumping stations in the region, the biggest being the Baricho Pumping station at 90,000cubic meters of water per day. A new chlorination building was also constructed at the Baricho plant.
  9. Purchased over 20,000 consumer meters for the Water Service Providers.
  10. Capacity built the Water Service Providers by at procuring at least seventy two (72) vehicles and a hundred and twenty eight (128) motor bikes, two (2) excavators and one (1) tractor, office furniture and computers, billing systems and repair kits, etc.
  11. Enabled the Water Service Providers increase their connections and thereby their revenue base.
  12. Supply and installation of over three hundred (300) plastic tanks of various sizes.
Production of Bulk Water

Currently the Agency also oversees the production and supply of bulk water. Bulk water is produced from 4 major sources namely Mzima Springs (Taita – Taveta County), Marere Springs (Kwale County), Baricho Well Field (Kilifi County) and Tiwi boreholes (Kwale County). After production, the water is treated and distributed to four counties, Kilifi, Kwale, Mombasa and Taita – Taveta. The Agency ensure that additional treatment is done at specific points along the transmission pipelines. Quality Assurance is undertaken on a daily basis. This includes Chemical and Bacteriological analysis of water produced and supplied. Thus, water supplied to the Water Service Providers from the Coast Water Works Development Agency is of the highest quality.
CWWDA ensures that the scarce water is fairly distributed to the counties. Bulk meters are used on the major transmission pipelines to measure the amount of water supplied to the respective Water Service Providers in the counties, and this forms the basis of bulk water billing.

TAVEVO Water and Sewerage Company

Tavevo water and Sewerage Company was contracted on 6th June 2006. The water and sanitation services were maintained and operated by Voi Municipal council before contracting of the water company. Water supply serves a population of approx 80,000.Average area covered by the scheme is 150km 2. The scheme has an average monthly water production 336,960m 3 against a design capacity production of 420,000m 3 /month.

Kilifi-Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company (KIMAWASCO)

Kilifi water and sewerage company limited was contracted as a WSP on 2 nd February 2006. The water supply was operated and maintained by ministry of water and irrigation before the contracting of the WSP.while the sewerage works belonged to Kilifi town council. Population served by the scheme is approx. 60,000. The area covered by the project is 22km 2. The total number of connections are 4329. Average total water production per month is 99,468m

Mombasa Water Supply and Sanitation Services Company (MOWASSCO)

The water company was contracted on 7 th august 2006. Water and sewerage works were operated and maintained by the ministry of water and irrigation. Area covered by the scheme is 64km 2 Estimated population served by the water supply is 120,000. Average monthly water production is 247,600m 3. Design capacity of the scheme is 21,000m 3 / day.

Lamu Water and Sewerage Company (LAWASCO)

The water company was contracted on 26 th July 2005. Both water and sanitation services were run by Nyahururu Municipal council before the WSP was contracted. Area served by the scheme is approx. 124km 2. Population within water undertaker ship is 150,000 while the population served by the water supply is 50,000. Average monthly water production of 109,000m 3 .

Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (MAWASCO)

Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (MAWASCO)was incorporated on 24th August 2005 and came into full operation on 1st February 2006.It is one of the Service Providers contracted by Coast Water Services Board under a Service Provision Agreement to provide water and sewerage services in Malindi District.

Kwale Water and Sewerage Company (KWAWASCO)

The water service provider was contracted on 26 th January 2007 . There is no sewage works in Kwale and the company is presently dealing with water services only.The water supply was run by the ministry of water and irrigation before the water company was contracted. Average monthly water production is 28,000m 3 or 933m 3 /day. Current water demand is 1,700m 3 /day or 51,000m 3 /month. Population served by the scheme is 36,666. Area covered by the scheme is 10m 2 .

Tana Water and Sewerage Company (TAWASCO)

The water service provider was contracted on 29 th June 2006. The water supply was operated and maintained by Tanariver town council before contracting the WSP. There is no sewerage system in Tanarivertownship. Estimated population served by the water supply is 7000. The average daily water production is 150m3
